The U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) awarded SSS funding to create a “low-cost, user-friendly environmental monitoring and resource characterization tool for Marine and Hydrokinetic (MHK) ocean energy installation sites.”

Phase I

June 2021 – June 2022
In June 2020, SSS received a $200,000 SBIR Phase I grant to conceive ASGUARDTM. Phase I ended on June 27, 2022.
  • DESIGNED a submerging vessel to 30 meters with much effort into a new unique buoyancy engine (Patent Pending).
  • WORKER with a partner on an acoustic array that will work at the surface and underwater to 100 meters.
  • IDENTIFIED magnetometers that can be integrated with Phase II.
  • DEMONSTRATED, before the end of Phase I, a prototype submerging capability (completed).a submerging vessel to 30 meters with much effort into a new unique buoyancy engine (Patent Pending).

Phase II

August 2022 – August 2024

$1.15 MM 2-year award (including TABA funding)

  • ADD an e-field sensor to the EMF sensor suite.
  • FURTHER REFINE the vessel to submerge and function down to 100 meters, typically below the thermocline, for offshore energy installations.
  • CREATE “Mast Head Electronics” (MHE) unit with AIS, anemometer, red over green navigational lights, 360° camera with classifiers, GNSS, and other features.
  • DEPLOY vessel at PacWave with sub-contractor at Oregon State University

Easily Deployable

The current HORUSTM platform can be deployed by one-to-two people from a dock or small boat without complex launch and recovery systems.
